Cannabis – Low Back Pain

Do you know that people treat their aches and pains with MMJ (Medical Marijuana)? I know I didn’t. No one ever told me that they treated their back pain with it but they sure cried the blues over low back pain regularly. That got me thinking about it.

In a book called “Cannabis for Chronic Pain” by Dr. Rav Ivker, is where I first heard about medicating low back pain with MMJ.

Don’t you find that interesting? Instead of prescribing MMJ, which of course up until recently, no one would dare to suggest using what I call “pot” to treat anything. You can be sure they weren’t going to tell anyone even if they did use it because using it was illegal until recently.

So, instead of prescribing MMJ, (through no fault of their own) doctors typically prescribe from the following list:

  • Tylenol (not a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug or NSAID)

NSAIDs — or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs:

  • Celecoxib (Celebrex)
  • Meloxicam (Mobic)
  • Nabumetone (Relafen)
  • Aspirin
  • Ibuprofen
  • Motrin
  • muscle relaxers
  • anti-depressants and
  • opioids

What do you say let’s meet and compare drugs? The one with the most destructive side effects loses and the winner with least side effects gets to buy everyone else a beer!

Let me break it down for you the Alley Kat way!

TYLENOL:  Stops the pain but does nothing for the inflamed muscles and connective tissues. Prescribed willy-nilly even though no real evidence it helps exists AND it can damage the liver in strong doses.

ASPIRIN, IBUPROFEN AND MOTRIN: Fight swelling and fever. Lucky you, they also deliver as a complementary freebie a dose of nausea, diarrhea, heartburn, stomach pain and if you really hitting it heavy – a bleeding ulcer or internal bleeding with a cherry on top of heart problem and kidney damage!

Just look at these amazing names!

CYCLOBENZAPRIN AKA FLEXERIL, METAXALONE AKA SKELAXIN AND TIZANIDINE AKA ZANAFLEX These delicious hideous medications known as muscle relaxants ONLY cause risky things like dizziness or drowsiness.

The primary purpose of these industrial drugs is to ease spasms in the muscles.

The worst we saved for last … and it’s the order puts it in right here … ANTIDEPRESSANTS! For back pain??? yes, check it out:

  • Amitriptyline
  • Clomipramine (Anafranil)
  • Desipramine (Norpramin)
  • Doxepin
  • Imipramine (Tofranil)
  • Nortriptyline (Pamelor)

You might have some dizziness, constipation or drowsiness and dry mouth.

So if the pain in your low back shoots down your leg it’s called neuropathic (when sensory nerves are inflamed or compressed). If you can tolerate pain, the relief from these antidepressants won’t be much over several weeks of using these drugs.

Keep in mind that your low back pain is what is hurting so why would you take an antidepressant which is described as a drug used to alleviate depression? Does your low back pain depress

Well then, what the hell else can you do if your low back pain is putting you out of commission for playing ball with the kids or enjoying a favorite sport?

You can consider using cannabis or hemp or pot or MMJ and throw in some yoga. You can try hot pads too. Or electrical stimulation like they use in the chiropractors office.

I sure don’t want to forget the biggie … getting an MRI is also known to be inaccurate 10-20 percent of the time. So, tell me why so many people go for surgeries that are risky, expensive and not so good? It makes people money but not you.

In a nutshell and this is taken from here:

On MRI examination of the lumbar spine, many people without back pain have disk bulges or protrusions but not extrusions. Given the high prevalence of these findings and of back pain, the discovery by MRI of bulges or protrusions in people with low back pain may frequently be coincidental. “

Notice the wording that reads ‘may frequently be coincidental’. Read the paper for yourself by clicking on the link I put there for you.

Obviously, I am not going to make a claim to know how MMJ can affect or not the low back pain of people. However, it is fairly well known that MMJ has properties that folks swear by with regard to inflammation reduction. We do know that dis-ease in the body is always accompanied with inflammation.

Lately it has come to light that there are more than one way to get your groove on with MMJ. It’s in vapor form, edible form, tinctures and regular good old smoke form.

The ignorance of the population lies in the fact that we are told to “listen to the doctor and do what he says” and so we do. Or, rather, so we did! But not anymore. How foolish we are to believe that doctors who did not exist as far back as ancient times can now treat us better than home remedies did back then.

I do admit they (Big Medicine) have managed – in our current culture – to create diseases and antidotes for those diseases – again profiting the creators not the poor folks who get these same sicknesses.

One thing low back pain sufferers all share in common is how they became ill in most cases. Maybe not all, but in most. And, that is over-doing something that put the lower back into malfunction. Your body in order to stop that tells you by signaling pain that you have reached your limit of destruction. So your risk depends on how much you choose to ignore the pain signals.

In the event you are curious and want to seek out treatment on your own and are not fearful of doing a bit of excellent research then you can visit your local dispensary can advise you on your MMJ options, your cannabis coach can advise you and you can also learn and grow the marijuana strain that will help you and learn to -do-it-yourself. Still illegal in your state? Well, we all know that illegal or not marijuana is everywhere. Just saying.

Gee whiz! Where to start? I can tell you that CBD made with an Indica strain is a good place to look. What’s really awesome is you can get a tincture (oil) and rub it directly on the pain and not have to injest it! How fn wonderful is that? You will pass a drug screen!

Instead of poisoning yourself with man-made drugs that pollute your whole body system, you can make or buy your own spot treatment. And, from my personal experience with chronic shoulder pain due to a car accident, it works.  For me anyway.
